Surayt
Terms of Use
Short version: Surayt is free to use for your own learning. You need an account and should be at least 13. The course material is ours, but the language itself of course belongs to no one. We do not promise the app is flawless, and you can delete your account at any time.
This is a translation. In case of any conflict, the Swedish version prevails.
1. About the service
Surayt is a mobile app that teaches Surayt, also called Turoyo, and the Syriac script, through Swedish. The course runs for 21 days and is aimed at people reconnecting with a language they may have heard at home.
The service is provided by Eric Kurtto, a private individual in Sweden, as a non-commercial community project. Contact: hej@surayt.se.
2. Accepting these terms
By creating an account or using the app you accept these terms and our privacy policy. If you do not accept them, please do not use the app.
3. Your account
- An account is required to save progress and sync between devices.
- You should be at least 13. If you are younger, a parent or guardian should create the account and accept these terms with you.
- Provide accurate details and keep your credentials to yourself.
- You are responsible for activity carried out through your account. Tell us immediately if you suspect someone else has access.
- An account is personal and should not be shared.
4. Cost
Surayt is free. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase, no advertising and no feature behind a paywall. We do not accept payments or donations through the app.
If this ever changes we will say so in the app well in advance, and content you have already worked through will not be locked retroactively.
5. How you may use the app
You may use Surayt for your own learning, and with family and friends. You may also use it in teaching, free of charge, for example in a language group or Sunday school. Do tell us if you do, we would be glad to hear it.
You may not:
- copy, resell or publish the course material as your own
- retrieve content automatically, for example by scraping, or circumvent technical restrictions
- attempt to access other people's accounts or our systems
- use the app for anything unlawful, or to harm, harass or abuse others
- submit feedback that is unlawful, abusive, or that contains other people's personal data
6. Content and rights
The app's course material, text, design, illustrations, trade marks and code belong to Eric Kurtto unless stated otherwise. You receive a personal, non-exclusive, revocable right to use the app under these terms. No ownership passes to you.
Individual words, phrases and grammatical forms of Surayt are facts about a language and are owned by no one. Spelling, diacritics and transliteration in the course are grounded in the coursebook at textbook.surayt.com, produced by the Surayt-Aramaic Online Project at Freie Universität Berlin. That project is independent of this app and has not reviewed or endorsed it.
The typefaces Noto Sans Syriac, Bricolage Grotesque, Hanken Grotesk and DM Mono are used under the SIL Open Font License.
If you believe any content infringes your rights, email us with the details and we will look into it promptly.
7. About the language taught
Surayt is spoken in many varieties. Pronunciation and vocabulary differ between villages in Tur Abdin and between families in the diaspora. The course teaches one of those varieties. If your family says something differently, that usually does not mean anyone is wrong.
We work to keep the content accurate but cannot guarantee that every word and form is free of error. The app does not replace a teacher, a dictionary or an academic source. If you find a mistake, send feedback in the app and we will correct it.
8. Availability and changes
We do what we can to keep the app working, but we do not promise uninterrupted service. It may be unavailable for maintenance, because of faults, or for reasons outside our control.
We may change, add or remove features and content. If we have to shut the service down entirely we will give notice in the app at least 30 days beforehand, so you have time to request your data.
9. Limitation of liability
Surayt is provided free of charge and as is. We give no warranty that the app is error-free, always available, or fit for a particular purpose.
Our liability is limited to what follows from mandatory Swedish law. To the extent the law permits such a limitation, we are not liable for indirect damages such as lost profit or lost data. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for intent or gross negligence, or any other liability that may not be limited by law. Your rights as a consumer under mandatory legislation are unaffected.
10. Ending
You may stop using the app at any time and delete your account under Profil, Inställningar, Radera konto. See the account deletion page.
We may suspend or close an account used in breach of these terms, normally after a warning where the situation allows. In cases of serious misuse, suspension may be immediate.
11. Apple as distributor
The app is downloaded through the App Store. This agreement is between you and us, not between you and Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app, its content or its support, and has no obligation to provide maintenance. Please direct any question or problem to us. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
12. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by Swedish law. Disputes are heard by the Swedish general courts, with Stockholm District Court as the court of first instance, unless mandatory consumer rules provide otherwise.
As a consumer you may also turn to the Swedish National Board for Consumer Disputes, ARN, or use the European Commission's online dispute resolution platform.
